Luna Mitchell: the first 36 hours

We are going on day 2 of our hospital stay and things are going great.

The first night was pretty tough. Luna decided that she wanted to stay up all night and hang out with us. Such a giving little girl! Luckily for Erika, she was able to get some good rest in the post operating room and throughout the day. Neither of us got more than about a 40 minute rest the first night. We worried probably more than we should have, but we were really expecting an experience more like Mira. Who screamed, stopped breathing and was generally a pain in our butts for the first 2 years of her life. I’m not sure how you not think that a beautiful little girl like this would be any trouble:

About 10AM yesterday I just crashed. Visiting hours here at the hospital are 1PM to 8PM, but I knew that I couldn’t make it until 1PM to get someone in here to get me some relief. We were able to get Lindsay, Erika’s sister, in just before lunch time. I snuck home to get cleaned up, restock our supplies and take a quick nap where I could get some peace and quiet. The phone kept ringing, but I did manage an hour or two. So nice!

Before I returned, I made a quick detour to the Fairview Park Early Education Center and picked up Mira from daycare. Here I was expecting Mira to be crying and distraught from the impending changes and shock to our lives. I walked in her classroom and she didn’t even notice me. I finally got her attention while she was on the floor reading a book, “Hi daddy” was all I got. Then back to the book she went. It’s probably a good sign that your daughter is confident enough in her world to be able to enjoy herself at school/daycare that she’s not falling to pieces every time you pick her up. I must say that there is also a person at daycare whom catered to Mira’s every whim, “Miss Llerno” as Mira calls her. So, its nice to know that Mira is in good hands whilst she is away at daycare.

Back at the hospital with Erika’s mom, I switched off with Lindsay. Erika said that she was able to spend some great quality time with Luna and her sister, which is just wonderful.

Erika also had a nice walk around the hospital ward, I took a quick pic of them as they were walking. You can see it here:

Through the evening Luna started to get pretty fussy and she’s still working pretty hard to get the hang of feeding. Around 11PM, I started to think that we weren’t going to get any sleep again last night. Luna didn’t seem hungry, or gassy but man was she upset. Up until this point, the nurses had been pretty adamant that pacifiers the first few weeks aren’t a good idea. And that they confuse babies who are breastfeeding. Staring down the barrell of another sleepless night I said to Erika, “I’m going to get a pacifier.” Within 3 seconds of popping that pacifier in, Luna was asleep and so was Erika. I hovered for another hour or so, but soon passed out also.

I am told that Erika and Luna woke up several more times during the night, for some eating and to get vitals. Erika said that at some point she got tired of yelling out “PAT” to try to wake me up. Sorry! I am normally a very light sleeper, but last night I was just cooked.

I’ll have the next update up later tonight with more pics, a visit from Dr. Starck and a potential day to go home!
